Dental X-Rays
December 21, 2023
What is a dental x-ray?
X-rays are a form of electromagnetic radiation that pass through the solid objects & give an image of tissues, bones, organs etc inside your body.
Why are dental x-rays important?
Dental x-rays are an essential diagnostic tool for dentists .
The dental problems which are not visible through naked eyes can be seen through x-rays. X-ray helps to visualize problems such as impacted teeth, cysts, abscesses, jaw disorder & bone loss.
Are dental x-rays safe?
Due to advancements in technology, now patients are exposed to minimal radiation doses during dental x-ray procedure but to avoid radiation exposure completely we use safety measures.
Safety measures taken to minimize radiation during dental x-rays
1.Only necessary images are taken:
X-rays are taken only for the region that presents a problem. If the problem is not localized but generalized then instead of taking multiple single teeth x-rays we prefer to take a single full mouth x-ray/OPG.
2.Use of body protection:
Thyroid collar and lead apron are used by both the doctor and the patient. The lead acts as a barrier preventing any radiation from entering the body. It should be made sure to cover all the vital organs so as to prevent any damage to our DNA
3.Use of focused imaging:
In this age of digital dentistry, to produce a RVG image we use the portable x-ray machine which will ensure that the radiation only passes through the targeted area & does not spread radiation to other regions.
4. Consideration for medical history:
Patients suffering from thyroid disorders/ who are pregnant need to be kept safe from radiation. Wearing protective equipment is mandatory for them. Hence we put special emphasis on noting down the patients past medical history.
5.Set low radiation level:
We only use RVG/digital x-ray which can give desired results with low radiation.
6.Use of fast image receptors:
This is to minimize the duration for which the patient is exposed to the radiation.
