Post extraction instructions

Post extraction, the formation of a blood clot is very important to ensure that the extraction site heals adequately. To ensure that the blood clot does not dislodge from the socket and cause infections, there are a few instructions that we need you to follow

1. Get adequate rest

It is important to take rest after the procedure and ensure that your head is always slightly upright position on the pillow to prevent continuous blood flow and to allow for clot formation

2. Avoid spicy food and stick to cold & soft diet

During the first few days post extraction, consumption of spicy food can trigger pain around the extraction site and hence should be avoided. Consume only room temperature food and follow a soft diet. Foods like curd rice and porridge are ideal.

3. Have plenty of fluids

Drinking water helps to keep your teeth clean & bacteria free. It also keeps your body hydrated & prevents infection at the extraction site but remember not to drink with straw as sucking motion disturb the clot. Always drink straight from the glass.

4. Do not smoke or drink alcohol

Such habits can lead to the formation of a dry socket which causes severe pain and significantly slows down the healing process. Habits should be avoided for a minimum of 4-5 days post extraction.

Do not smoke or drink alcohol

5. Do not disturb the clot

You may feel strange after removal of tooth but avoid poking at the extraction site with your tongue or other objects which may provoke bleeding & increase risk of dry socket

6. Use an ice pack

You might feel pain or swelling after tooth extraction which usually lasts for 3-4 days. Placing an ce pack externally on cheek at the side of extraction multiple times throughout the day helps in reducing the swelling and pain

7. Brush carefully

You should not neglect the routine oral hygiene habits such as brushing or flossing but be careful and avoid brushing at the site of extraction. Also remember to not rinse water vigorously as it may disturb and dislodge the clot.

8. Take all the prescribed medications

Making sure to take all the medications as prescribed by us will help you recover faster

9. Follow up visit with your dentist

The follow up visit happens after 1 week of extraction. It is important to come in for a follow up as it enables us to check the healing of the extraction site. Sutures if placed can also be removed at this visit.
