Types of Braces

Now that you have decided to get braces, let us help you decide what kind of braces you should opt for. At CureAlign Dentistry, our Orthodontist- Dr Padmini Vaddavalli works with the following kind of braces:

Types of braces

1. Conventional Metal Braces

  • These are the most commonly used kind of braces that are available in the market
  • They are made up of stainless steel giving that metallic look
Conventional metal braces

Advantages:
 – Economic
– Easy to use
– Practiced by most of the orthodontists
– The modules/rubber bands used to tie the wire to the braces comes in various fun colours

Disadvantages:
– Not very esthetic
– Food tends to get stuck around the braces
– Slightly difficult to clean
– Edge of the braces can cause some cuts and bruises
– Puts a considerable amount of force on teeth due to the usage of modules/rubber bands

2. Conventional Ceramic Braces

  • These are the esthetic counterpart of the conventional metal braces
  • Commonly practiced by majority of the Orthodontists
Conventional ceramic braces

Advantages:
 – Colour of the braces is very similar to the natural teeth colour, ie it is very discreet, hence does not stand out & allows the patient to smile freely
– Economic
– Works exactly like how conventional metal braces work
– Practiced by most of the orthodontists

– The modules/rubber bands used to tie the wire to the braces comes in various fun colours

– Lesser incidence of cuts and bruises than metal braces due to the smoother edges

Disadvantages:
– More expensive than metal braces
– Can get stained easily due to all the spices that we use in our food
– Made out of polycrystalline alumina. Not as strong as metal braces, hence can break easily.

3. Self Ligating Metal Braces

  • Self ligating braces eliminate the need for a module/rubber band to hold the wire in place. Instead, it has a locking door mechanism where we can insert the wire in position and close the door of the braces to lock the wire in place
Self ligating metal braces

Advantages:
 – By eliminating the use of modules and incorporating a locking door mechanism, it reduces the amount of pressure on the teeth
– Does not have any sharp edges, hence lesser chances of getting cuts and bruises
– Works at a faster rate as compared to conventional braces, hence treatment duration is shorter
– Easier to brush around

Disadvantages:
– Expensive as compared to conventional braces
– Locking door mechanism may get jammed

4. Self Ligating Ceramic Braces

Self ligating ceramic braces
  • Same mechanism of working as the metal self ligating braces
  • Same advantages and disadvantages as the metal self ligating braces.

Some additional advantages are:

– Stain resistant. Hence, stay esthetic for the majority of the treatment duration
– Lesser chance of breakage as compared to conventional ceramic braces

5. Damon Metal Braces

  • Damon braces are the best self ligating braces available currently.

– Helps give a wide Hollywood smile

Disadvantages:
– Very few orthodontists who are specialized in providing Damon braces

– Expensive
